We’re excited to launch Speaking of Research: the SCDTP podcast, the first official podcast series from the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership. This brand-new series highlights the work of our doctoral researchers and explores how their research is making a real impact.

Series One was recorded at our annual conference at Cumberland Lodge in April 2025. In each episode, researchers speak with Catherine McDonald from Research Podcasts about their projects, who might benefit from their work, and the changes they hope to inspire.

🌊 Episode 4 – Now Available. From Testimony to Toolkit: Creating Change for Exploited Care Workers with Kezia Pugh

In this episode, we meet Kezia Pugh, a doctoral researcher at the University of Brighton, whose research investigates the labour exploitation faced by migrant care workers in the UK. Kezia brings attention to the precarious and often abusive conditions within the social care sector, including insecure contracts, low pay, and structural injustice.

She discusses her shift toward using existing testimonies and third-sector evidence to inform her research, and the importance of building sustained relationships with practitioners. Kezia’s work is deeply grounded in impact—supporting grassroots change, informing policy, and developing practical tools for campaigners and communities alike.
