We’re excited to launch Speaking of Research: the SCDTP podcast, the first official podcast series from the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership. This brand-new series highlights the work of our doctoral researchers and explores how their research is making a real impact.

Series One was recorded at our annual conference at Cumberland Lodge in April 2025. In each episode, researchers speak with Catherine McDonald from Research Podcasts about their projects, who might benefit from their work, and the changes they hope to inspire.

🌊 Episode 3 – Now Available. Unpacking Inequality: Trans Autistic Voices in Health and Social Care with Katie Munday

In this episode, we speak with Katie Munday, a doctoral researcher at the University of Portsmouth, about their powerful research into healthcare inequities experienced by trans and autistic individuals.

Drawing on both personal and professional experience, Katie’s work uses participatory action research to centre the voices of those most affected—working in collaboration with a co-researcher group of four other trans and autistic adults. Together, they explore the compounding challenges of navigating healthcare systems shaped by systemic exclusion.

Katie discusses the intersecting issues that influence healthcare access, including chronic illness, accessibility barriers, and recent legal rulings that may further marginalise identity groups. They also reflect on the importance of using networks and social media to drive real-world policy change and raise public awareness.
