What: Finding Your Throughline: Writing Across Disciplines

Good interdisciplinary writing connects the evidence into a line of reasoning that readers can follow.

Working between fields comes with a distinctive set of challenges that conventional academic writing training rarely addresses. Who are you writing for? Whose standards apply? How do you build a coherent argument when your material, your approach and your readers all pull in different directions?

This workshop is designed for researchers whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries. You’ll be guided through a series of short, reflective exercises that you’ll apply to your own research topic to find the perspective, voice and throughline that’s unique to your project. And you’ll reflect on how your position at the intersection of fields is not a liability but a valuable intellectual resource.

Learning outcomes:

• Build a throughline that will carry you (and your readers) through a substantial piece of writing.
• Craft an argument that integrates theory, literature, findings and your own critical reflection.
• Amplify your authorial voice to write with greater confidence about what your data means.
• Articulate your contribution in language that speaks across disciplinary boundaries.

Facilitator: Dr Heather Dyer is a Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellow, author and academic writing coach who delivers workshops, writing retreats and 1:1 coaching across several doctoral training partnerships. All her workshops incorporate exercises that help researchers recognize new connections and relationships within their projects.
