We’re excited to launch Speaking of Research: the SCDTP podcast, the first official podcast series from the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership. This brand-new series highlights the work of our doctoral researchers and explores how their research is making a real impact.

Series One was recorded at our annual conference at Cumberland Lodge in April 2025. In each episode, researchers speak with Catherine McDonald from Research Podcasts about their projects, who might benefit from their work, and the changes they hope to inspire.

🌊 Episode 2 – Now Available. Net Zero Meets Nostalgia: Decarbonising the Heritage Sector with Nishit Srivastava

The second episode of the Speaking of Research podcast is now available!

In this episode, we hear from Nishit Srivastava, a doctoral researcher at the University of Portsmouth, who shares his cutting-edge research on sustainability transitions in the UK heritage sector.

Nishit unpacks the challenge of decarbonising historical buildings and artefacts—an essential yet complex task in the journey to Net Zero. Using Cumberland Lodge as a case study, he explores how policy can be designed to support change in this traditionally fragmented sector, while still preserving cultural and historical value.

Drawing on a rich interdisciplinary methodology—including a problematizing literature review, semi-structured interviews, and social network analysis—Nishit provides a thought-provoking look at the dynamics between stakeholders, policy, and heritage sustainability.

📌 Correction at 2:04 – Nishit meant to say “1 in every 4 UK homes is a historical home.”

Keep an eye out for more episodes as we continue showcasing the diverse voices and research across the South Coast DTP.
