A new short film has just been produced about participatory listening research as part of Bethan Prosser’s SCDTP Post-doctoral Fellowship. Bethan’s knowledge exchange project has all been about extending and applying the innovative methodology that she created during her PhD. Participatory listening research is a way of listening with others to the environment to generate new knowledge and discoveries, whilst embracing different listening experiences, practices and positionalities.
Last summer, Bethan ran a participatory listening workshop with community researchers from the Who Owns Brighton? project, run by Brighton & Hove Community Land Trust. This project set out to explore issues of planning and redevelopment by investigating the case study of Circus Street, a recent redevelopment site.
The participatory listening workshop provided an additional opportunity for the community researchers to explore the site sonically and reflect further on their findings. It also enabled Bethan to test out her toolbox with a new setting and group of people and learn more about how these tools can be of use for social policy engagement.
The short film showcases this workshop and is available to watch here: https://vimeo.com/1047534129
