Internships Fund (INTF)

Internships Fund (INTF)

This additional funding offers SCDTP students the opportunity to undertake internships designed to apply and develop their research skills in a real-world or professional setting.

Internships are intended to enhance students’ career development, support the practical application of research expertise, and strengthen engagement with external organisations across academic, public, and private sectors.

Important Note

Students whose funding started during or after October 2024 (SCDTP 2 Cohort onwards) will follow a new pathway called Research in Practice, which replaces the internships scheme. Full details will be provided during studentship induction and training.

Guide for Non-Academic Partner (NAP) organisations

The South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) Internship Scheme provides an opportunity for non-academic organisations to host ESRC-funded doctoral researchers on short-term placements. These internships are designed to create mutually beneficial partnerships, giving students the chance to apply their research skills in professional settings while enabling host organisations to access cutting-edge expertise in the social sciences.

Funding is available for two routes:

  • Advertised internships

    – opportunities typically offered through SCDTP partner organisations

  • Student-led internships

    – bespoke arrangements developed by the student in collaboration with an external host

Internships may last up to three months full-time or part-time equivalent

Placements must take place during the active period of the studentship

Students undertaking an internship will receive a funded extension to their studentship equal to the length of the placement

Placements must take place during the active period of the studentship.

Placements occurring in the final year should normally finish at least six months before the studentship end date – this includes the period of funded extension.

Please read further the SCDTP Internship Guide for students here:

Students can claim reasonable travel and accommodation expenses from the SCDTP

Where possible, the SCDTP will also support students in negotiating additional contributions from the host organisation to help offset costs

Applications are assessed based on the relevance, value for money, and feasibility of the proposed budget. Retrospective applications (i.e. for internships that have already started) cannot be considered.
