Advanced podcasting for academics
An online workshop and the chance to be a guest on your own video podcast, in conversation with a key stakeholder
When:
Workshop – Friday 8th May, 13.00-16.00, online
Recording – One hour slot, on a day to be agreed from 9th June- 14th July, online
What it’s about:
This training comprises:
- A highly practical half-day online workshop to give you the skills, confidence and strategy to be an engaging guest and lead a conversation with your chosen stakeholder on a visualised podcast with an experienced podcast producer. This will also give you the opportunity to hone the message(s) from your research and how you can effectively engage the public to generate impact and drive meaningful change. These skills will be transferable to other media and communication activities you are planning for your research.
- Experiential learning gleaned through creating your own podcast episode with the guidance and support of Research Podcasts. Going beyond basic set up, launching and running a podcast, course participants will learn to use equipment for a video episode, plus communication skills in planning not scripting their content, storytelling, honing the message, dialogic responding and interjecting. You will be a presenter with a guest as well as helping to produce the episode.
Facilitators:
This training is facilitated by Research Podcasts who produced our first and second SCDTP Podcast series with us, see 🎙️ Introducing – Speaking of Research: The SCDTP Podcast Series – South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership and Speaking of Research: The SCDTP Podcast | Podcast on Spotify
Who it’s for:
This training is for people who may have undertaken the Introduction to Podcasts training and appeared in Series 1 or 2, or people who may have some podcasting experience, or simply people who are confident speakers. It is more advanced and more specialist than previous podacast training and so there are only six places available. You will need to have a good relationship with a relevant stakeholder as you will record a thirty-minute episode in guided conversation with them. You will not be expected to edit and prior experience is not essential. If you work with other stakeholders and want more people to hear about your research you should apply – this will be a novel, meaningful and structured space in which to learn.
How to join:
The are only 6 places available, so you will need to express your interest using the online form and including a written pitch of up to 200 words for what your recorded conversation will be about. To confirm your place on the training you will need to confirm that you, and the stakeholder you have lined up to converse with, are happy with a video format. The training is costly so if you sign up you must let us know if your circumstances change and you cannot make it so we can reallocate the place.
Preparation:
You will need your own laptops/PC, webcam, headphones, and ideally a microphone for making the podcast. We will send instructions ahead of the sessions. There are usually workarounds for equipment so please don’t let the technical requirements put you off, just let us know about your situation.
Follow up:
SCDTP will also be making a third series of our SCDTP podcast Speaking of Research incorporating the products of this training. The working theme for the third series is In dialogue with stakeholders. The six episodes will be published together on our SCDTP YouTube channel and all major podcasting apps including Spotify and Apple in October 2026. This is designed to make an significant impact and to coincide with the induction of a new cohort of SCDTP students.
